What is Environment, Social and Governance (ESG)?

ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) factors have become critical to the success of businesses of all sizes, in all industries. Every stakeholder in your business wants to know that you are doing good in more than a purely financial sense. Namely; what is your impact on the environment? What impact do you have on society and how does your business conduct itself? Essentially they are asking; Are you doing good?

Customers, Suppliers, Employees, Shareholders, Investors, Lenders, Regulators and the general public are all examples of stakeholders who want to know about your ESG strategy. Neglect your responsibilities and your business will quickly lose its appeal to your stakeholders.

Leading companies take a strategic, long-term approach to their ESG strategy. Some are making sweeping changes to the way they do business as their markets adapt to new stakeholder sentiment and buying patterns. Investors are making investment decisions based on ESG performance. Mandatory ESG reporting requirements are under review in the UK, Europe and US which would force all companies over and above a certain size or turnover to file an ESG report showcasing their impact. Whilst this is not yet compulsory, many lenders and investment firms are already withdrawing funding from business who have a poor ESG strategy.
